World Cinema & Languages Days
Language Institute, UW-Madison

The UW-Madison Language Institute is pleased to announce that it is now accepting applications for the spring high school events World Cinema Day (April 4, 2008) and World Languages Day (April 22, 2008).

To apply for either of these events, please find the application on the World Cinema Day (http://www.languageinstitute.wisc.edu/wcd) and World Languages Day (http://www.languageinstitute.wisc.edu/wld) websites.

For priority consideration, please submit your application by mail or by fax by November 20th.

As you may know, World Cinema Day is a half-day event that brings high school students and teachers to the Orpheum Theatre in downtown Madison for the screening of a high-quality international film along with an introduction and discussion led by a UW faculty member. Curricular materials based on the film are provided to participating schools in advance. This event is free, and there is no limit to the number of students a high school may bring.

World Languages Day is a day-long event that takes place on the UW campus, with around forty different sessions on world languages and cultures led by UW-Madison faculty, staff and graduate students. Topics span the globe from "Ancient Tibetan Chants" to "Yoruba Greetings", from "French Film Today" to "German Fairy Tales". This event is also free, with a limit of 30 students per school.

Health and Healing in Southeast Asia - Teacher Workshop | New date!!

The date for the Health & Healing Workshop has been moved to:

Sponsored by Center for Southeast Asian Studies, UW-Madison and the US Department of Education.

Guest speakers: Yang Tai Vang (Hmong shaman), Kabzuag Vang (Freedom Inc.), Mary Grow (Cultural Anthropologist), and UW-Madison Faculty. Visit with Cambodian community leader Sarith Ou, the head monk, and community members! Experience Khmer culture and cuisine at the Cambodian Buddhist Temple in Oregon, Wisconsin.

2008 US/Bahrain: Youth Citizenship for Disability Inclusion Exchange Program
Mobility International USA

Mobility International USA (MIUSA) is seeking U.S. youth with and without disabilities ages 15-17 for a 21-day leadership program to Bahrain. Full program scholarships are provided to cover international airfare, program activities, lodging, meals, transportation etc.

What: Youth Citizenship for Disability Inclusion Exchange Program Travel to Manama Bahrain with MIUSA staff, as citizen ambassadors of the U.S. during a 21-day leadership program sponsored by the U.S. Department of State.

Be welcomed and hosted in Bahrain by young Bahraini citizens and the Bahrain Disabled Sports Federation.

Participate in workshops, panel discussions, cultural activities and site visits focusing on youth leadership, education and the role of young citizens with disabilities in civil society.

Individuals selected for the program will receive a full program scholarship to cover international airfare, program activities and materials, meals, lodging, disability-related accommodations, health insurance and accessible transportation.

When: March 9 - 31, 2008.

Where: Manama, Kingdom of Bahrain. An island nation known as the 'Pearl' of the Persian Gulf, with a population of 700,000. Sweeping desert-scapes, ancient fortresses and azure blue seas exist in vivid contrast to the very cosmopolitan and modern cities of Bahrain.

2008 Fulbright-Hays Group Project in South Africa and Lesotho

The following information tells about an opportunity for teachers who are American citizens or permanent residents to have an incredible international experience next summer at very low cost.

Mark Denham and I have led two prior Fulbright-Hays group projects in Southern Africa. The teachers who participated have used their experiences to enrich their teaching, excite their students and share their insights with their local communities.

For the attention of K-12 and Community College Teachers and graduate students:

Study in South Africa and Lesotho
U. S. Department of Education Fulbright-Hays Group Project
June 21 - July 30, 2008

Examine South Africa's interaction with Lesotho; learn about the cultures and history of Southern Africa; participate in seminars with African professors, politicians, civil servants and community activists; engage in service learning experiences with African teachers, care givers and students; enjoy activities like game viewing, hiking and shopping; embellish your credentials with a Fulbright-Hays participant award; visit non-malarial and low risk areas in Southern Africa.

Fulbright-Hays Group Projects grant pays 85% of travel, food, and lodging overseas expenses. Cost share expense is only $850 for over five weeks abroad.
