Resources for the Kony 2012 Video
Dear Educators,
Some teachers have expressed their interest in finding resources to teach the controversial Kony 2012 video. The Outreach Council of the African Studies Association has provided a guide to approach the video which is available on the UW Madison African Studies website. If you may be interested in further discussions about using these materials and general discussions about conflicts and human right issues in these East & Central African states, the African Studies Program will arrange for a workshop in the coming few weeks.
Feel free to email me directly if you are interested in the workshop so that we can make the necessary arrangements.

World Affairs Seminar for High School Students
Please encourage your students to attend the World Affairs Seminar, an interactive global education summer program that brings together hundreds of high school students from around the world. This year's theme is Global Communication 2.0: Technology's Impact on Understanding, and will be held at Carroll University in Waukesha from June 16-22, 2012.
Students will explore how global communication and new technologies affect the way we live, work, and interact on a daily basis. Through presentations, small group discussions and other interactive activities, students will examine the connections between technology, culture, development, human rights and security. It is a great opportunity for students to meet international experts, build leadership skills, and deepen global engagement and understanding.

Exploring Humanitarian Law: Preserving Human Rights & Dignity in Conflict
Educator's Workshop, 18-21 June 2012 in Madison, WI
Global Studies at UW-Madison, in collaboration with the American Red Cross - together with partners from the Wisconsin International Outreach Consortium (WIOC), and the Universities of Illinois, North Carolina, and Washington - is offering a three and a half day workshop geared to middle school, high school, and technical college educators interested in bringing humanitarian law issues & resources into their classrooms and lectures.
The workshop is built around the Exploring Humanitarian Law curriculum developed by the American Red Cross (http://ehl.redcross.org/). In addition to trained Red Cross staff guiding an in-depth, hands-on exploration of the curriculum, the workshop will also include presentations by scholars, educators, and practitioners from communities around the state.
Participants have the option of taking the workshop for one (1) UW-Madison graduate credit if they wish.

The registration fee is $150 and includes a full printed curriculum, housing for those who require accommodation (parking for those commuting from the Madison area), a working dinner during the workshop, all fees for those choosing to take the workshop for optional credit, and more!!

The Politics of Motherhood in Latin America
July 11-13, 2012
Motherhood is generally viewed as a conservative institution in Latin American society with mother’s lives centered on the private world of child rearing and self-sacrifice for their families. This Institute explores the public dimension of motherhood in Latin America, examining efforts to shape mothers’ lives and demands by mothers to participate as mothers in their nation’s politics and economic development.
Topics include micro-lending programs for women, reproduction and welfare policies, and how indigenous mothers’ handicraft production both challenges and reinforces gender stereotypes.

A collaboration between UW-Whitewater, UW-Madison Latin American, Caribbean and Iberian Studies (LACIS) and the UW-Milwaukee Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies (CLACS). CLACS and LACIS are a consortial Title VI National Resource Center, funded by the U.S. Department of Education.
National Survey of K-12 Language Instruction
The National Capital Language Resource Center (NCLRC), of The George Washington University, is conducting a national survey of U.S.-based programs and schools involved in the teaching of Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Kashmiri, Malayalam, Marathi, Nepali, Punjabi, Sinhala, Tamil, Telugu, and Urdu to K-12/school-age children. The survey, funded by a U.S. Department of Education Title VI International Research & Studies grant, is online and should take no more than 20-30 minutes to fill out:

Southeast Asian Studies Summer Institute
The Southeast Asian Studies Summer Institute (SEASSI) is an eight-week intensive language training program for undergraduates, graduate students and professionals. Instruction is offered for academic credit at the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd year levels in Indonesian, Javanese, Filipino, Hmong, Khmer, Lao, Thai, Vietnamese, and Burmese.
